The global movement for a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Indian companies, in inspiration with the original BDS movement for Palestine, was pursued with renewed vigor following India’s unilateral, illegal and immoral annexing of their part of the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. As a consequence, a cross section of Kashmiri civil society, along with activists from across the world, including supporters from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), began to work fervently to confront the fanaticism and genocidal intentions of the Indian Hindutva state.
Since 1947, India has denied Kashmiris their fundamental rights of freedom, equality, and self-determination through murder, mass rapes, ethnic cleansing leading to mass graves, racial discrimination, and military occupation. At the moment, the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir is the most densely militarized space on the planet. Despite abundant condemnation of Indian policies by the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Genocide Watch, and other reputable international bodies and preeminent human rights organizations, the world community has failed to hold India accountable. As a result, BDS4Kashmir has called for a global citizens’ response.
The campaign for boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) is shaped by a principled, legal and rights-based approach to protest crimes committed in Indian-Occupied Kashmir by the Indian occupation forces. Our organization works to raise awareness and penalize those guilty of gross violations of human rights, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Indian-Occupied Kashmir. Together, with broad sections of global civil society, and in cooperation with the diverse peoples in United Nation’s recognized disputed territory of Kashmir, including those residing in: (1) Azad Kashmir; (2) Gilgit-Baltistan; (3) Indian-Occupied Kashmir; (4) Jammu; (5) Ladakh; (6) as well as among the Kashmiri diaspora. Ultimately, we collectively urge for various forms of boycott against India until it meets its obligations under international law and allows for a United Nation’s sponsored plebiscite to ascertain the will of the people in the disputed territory.
Now, we – BDS4Kashmir, make an urgent, worldwide call to #BoycottIndia and join #BDS4Kashmir. This appeal is increasingly being endorsed by civil society organizations, trade unions and social justice movements throughout the world. By working as a united front, all segments of global civil society can confront the neo-capitalist, fascist juggernaut that suffocating millions of Kashmiris. Hence, the appeal for all justice-minded and socially conscious people/corporations to boycott target Indian products and companies that profit from the violations/brutalization of Kashmiri people. Moreover, we also encourage a boycotting of Indian sporting, cultural and academic institutions who attempt to normalize the occupation of Kashmir, unless a clear statement supporting the principle of Kashmiri right of self-determination is issued.
